Happiness comes in Latkes

Being a picky little kid my face would twist whenever I had to try a new food at my Grandmother's holiday gatherings, be it whitefish, horse radish or even poppy seed hamantashen. But my Grandmother always knew how to make my twisted frown into a smile, with a healthy supply of potato latkes to wash down any new taste. Now that my palate has matured and anything my Grandmother cooks is a rare delicacy, I still can never get enough latkes.

For a quick fix for my crispy potato cravings,  Barney Greengrass Deli always satisfies when eating in or taking out, or if I'm downtown, the Polish eatery Veselka is perfect for a mid afternoon coffee and latke. However, when I have the time, my favorite thing to do is make these heavenly fried patties myself, just like Nana used to. I love this recipe from Smittenkitchen.com, made with onions and matzoh meal for that authentic taste. So grab a few friends to help peel and grate potatoes, simmer some homemade apple sauce and make the perfect meal addition or munchie for any guest, no matter how picky.

Potato Latkes
1 large baking potato (1 pound), peeled
1 small onion (4 ounces), peeled
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon matzo meal
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 1/2 teaspoons salt (update: found later on we preferred only one teaspoon salt)
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
Peanut oil, for frying

In a food processor or on a box grater, coarsely shred the potato and onion. Transfer to a colander and squeeze dry. Let stand for 2 minutes, then squeeze dry again. Transfer the potato mixture to a large bowl. Add the flour, matzo meal, egg, salt and pepper and stir to combine.
In a medium skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil until shimmering. Drop packed teaspoons of the potato mixture into the skillet and flatten them with the back of a spoon. Cook the latkes over moderately high heat until the edges are golden, about 1 1/2 minutes; flip and cook until golden on the bottom, about 1 minute. Drain on paper towels. Repeat with the remaining potato mixture, adding more oil to the skillet as needed.

Can someone tell me why woman went ape shit over these last fall?
It was way after the whole pirate boot trend, I'm talking 2 years after (think Pirates of the Caribbean craze) . Plus don't they seem like a cop out in creativity? I just think of some Strongbad episode where he mashes everything together to come up with Trogdor....but it's actually Isabel Marant smooshing fringe, tassels, chains and asymmetric heels into one whole shebang.

The Blind Barber

(photo from T Mag blog)

Okay, this is a little too good to be true.  A barber shop where you can get a cut, prices ranging from 20$ - 40$ that...get this, come with a complimentary cocktail!  They also have beard trims, and a hot / cold towel hangover cure.  And to top it off it's gorgeous AND on my street!  I'm going to have to go ahead and get that sex change I've been saving up for... or try to live vicariously by treating my man to a shave while I sip his, erm... cocktail.  OH and of course the house specials are whisky drinks.

"The Blind Barber is a return to the "Roaring Twenties". Defined by the explosion of culture and its break from tradition, the "Roaring Twenties" was a movement in creativity. The Blind Barber hopes to revive this very movement while redefining modern manhood. The concept goes well beyond just a barbershop and bar located in the East Village, but rather expands into all the realms of the modern gentleman: Fashion, Music, Lifestyle, Grooming and others.

We hope to create an identity that will cultivate personalities; a brand and place where creatives come to be inspired as well as inspire others."

…………………………………………………
"According to Kirsch, who oversees the bar and lounge, house favorites include the Sweeney Todd (Jameson, egg whites, lemon juice and honey syrup, topped with grenadine and served on the rocks) and Rum ’n’ Rye (Overholt Rye, Goslings Rum, lime juice and Orgeat Syrup, served over ice).

pass me a brew, dog.

OK, so this isn't a rye, but these dudes do a much better job supporting the alcohol dependent brotherhood then those Bushmill's lame-os.  Brewdog Brewery is pushing the limits of beer and is about to change your man-del waring, beer pong playing, fist pumping world, Chad and Brad.
CHECK THIS: A beer with 55% alcohol content, a beer that costs $1000 a bottle, and a beer thats stuffed inside a small taxidermy rodent. ALL IN ONE.

Thats right brohan, the End Of History limited edition beer  is here, or was. (The 11 bottles produced have already sold out) But still, this changes everything. These bros are hot, rich and completely out of their minds. If this is the new Alt-bro, then I say, raise those morbidly expensive squirrel bottles in the air and drink to the best idea of all time.
